4 Veggie Barbecue Options Even Meat Eaters will Love

When it comes to food we all have different diets and tastes. Some people love devouring a succulent steak, others perhaps only eat fish, and for a part of the population, being veggie is the way to go. These days, the number of vegans and vegetarians is rising all the time. However, many wrongly believe that BBQs are a no-go for non-meat eaters. In other words, there aren’t veggie options to grill on the barbecue and the world of vegetarian recipes is narrow or simply non-existent at your average BBQ.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. We believe everyone deserves the delights of a BBQ – vegetarian or vegan, carnivore or pescatarian. As experts with over 40 years of experience in the BBQ industry, we have all kinds of veggie barbecue options and recipes to share. So let’s go vegetarian.

1. Try a veggie burger option on your barbecue

For many vegetarians, the idea of a burger is appealing. The flavours of crisp salad, freshly made bread and a vegetarian patty combine, creating a joy for the taste buds. If you do want to maintain the traditional feel and offer your vegetarian guests a burger, you can buy them ready-made from a supermarket, but it’s often more fun to follow a vegetarian recipe and make your own for the barbecue.

You can use grilled aubergine with halloumi and pesto as a filling. Beetroot and chilli offer a spicy alternative, but these ingredients need to be cooked on a gentle heat for about 10 minutes on each side. Mushrooms can also act as the main filling for a burger, perhaps flavoured with garlic or mozzarella cheese.

2. Grilled vegetable recipes for a perfect veggie BBQ

Corn on the cob is something you can really get your teeth into. It is even tastier if you partly cook it in boiling water the day before – then all you need to do on the day itself is barbecue them on a high heat for about five minutes, until the kernels have started to pop. You can serve them with melted butter, black pepper and a Parmesan-style vegetarian cheese.

Other vegetables which you can easily grill on a barbecue, and which can be served as part of a main or a side dish for vegetarians, include whole peppers, cherry tomatoes, onions, carrots and asparagus. We recommend that where suitable the vegetables are sliced first and cooked slowly; you can also wrap them in packets of foil and cook them directly on the hot charcoal. This veggie option will make your BBQ memorable for all vegetarians – without a doubt.

3. Veggie kebabs on skewers or sticks — barbecue perfection

Just because it’s a barbecue doesn’t mean it all has to be about burgers and buns. There are so many veggie options. Grilled vegetable kebabs are an equally tasty alternative.

You can mix together onions, peppers and mushrooms, season with an olive oil and herb mixture, and cook for five minutes on the barbecue. Another combination that works equally well is halloumi cheese, sage and new potatoes, although you will need to boil the last ingredient in water for about 15 minutes first.

Cooking vegetables, particularly smaller ones, on a skewer is also a practical option. It can help keep every piece in place, making them easier to barbecue. Skewers or a stick can also help your guests, as there’s less chance of sticky fingers, and it cuts down on all the mess afterwards too!

4. Serve a salad as another vegetarian

Even your meat-eating guests will appreciate a lighter, healthy option. Tomato-based salads are easy to put together. They can be accompanied with oregano or basil or, if you have a little more time, grilled avocado and mozzarella cheese. You will need to prepare them in advance, as these salads always taste better if they have been given an hour or two to chill properly. Chickpeas add something different to the average green salad. Using a dressing of lemon juice and olive oil will help to soften them up, and they can be served with parsley and sliced red onion for flavour.
