A quick heat logs FAQ guide to warm your world

Heat logs burn in a fireplace in an Andy Warhol style graphic

On your travels through life, have you stumbled across the concept of biomimicry? Ok yes it’s a slightly more obscure term. And yes the idea isn’t exactly bandied about Insta and TikTok. Basically biomimicry is when we use manmade means to replicate what we find in nature. For example we might look to a beehive to design a modular shelving system. So what’s this go to do heat logs? Read on and we will reveal the meaning behind the rhetoric.

What exactly is a heat log?

Logic dictates that we start at the definitive roots. So what’s a heat log? Biomimicry holds the key to open the answer lock. Essentially, we have looked to natural wooden logs for inspiration. The question being: how can we enhance the best qualities of these logs in a new manmade log? Heat logs are the solution. Basically a heat log is a ‘manufactured’ briquette made from 100% renewable wood sources including chippings and sawdust. This wood residue is turned into a fine powder, which is then added to a log-shaped mould and compressed at extremely high pressures in a special machine. Thanks to the wonders of compression, no glue or binding chemicals are needed at all. The result is a 100% natural log with a super duper low internal moisture level of between 7% to 5%. Usher in the age of cleaner, hotter and higher temperature burns.

Why are heat logs so good?

Solid follow up logic here people. Well where do we start? Heat logs are 100% natural, clean, versatile and suitable for any wood burning appliance. These logs are also super efficient, producing a massive amount of heat. If we drill down to performance core, it’s all about the jaw-droppingly low internal moisture levels. As we all know, less water and impurities in your wood equals a better and hotter burn.In fact, heat logs usually generate approximately three times the heat of conventional logs.  Lower internal moisture levels also means less ash and an easier clean up too. Wins all around!

What’s the burn time for a heat log?

Looking at the stats, heat logs generally have a burn time of about 60-90 minutes. Due to their consistent shape and density, this figure won’t fluctuate per log. The result? It’s easier to plan out the amount of logs you will need for you fire, relative to how long you want to keep the fire burning.

Can I burn heat logs in a wood burning stove?

As we have already mentioned, yes of course! We’d even go so far as to say that these clever little logs are a perfect partner for any wood burning stove. Size? Perfect. Practicality and compatibility? Perfect. Handling and stacking? Perfect.

Are heat logs a better choice than regular logs?

Yes we are purists and we love kiln dried logs. However we have to call a spade a spade. Heat logs do deliver more heat than traditional logs. And their increased efficiency makes them a more economical choice. Plus their constant shape and density gives you more control over your heat output and fire duration too. Finally heat logs are more sustainable as they are made from wood waste. Hello eco!

How do I light heat logs?

Yes heat logs are a breath of fresh air in the fire game. However the principles of firelighting still remain. To get your heat logs going, simply take about 6-8 pieces of kindling and a few firelighters. Then light your firelighters and let the kindling catch. Finally add 1 or 2 heat logs. Job done and good to go!

Is it easy to store heat logs at home?

We’re are not trying to debunk the theory of relativity here. Common sense is the way forward. So yes it is easy to store heat logs at home. All you need to do is store your heat logs in a dry area and keep your packet sealed as best you can. This will stop any nefarious and encroaching moisture getting into your lovely logs. If you are storing your logs in a garage, make sure that they are stored off the ground.
