Most of the firewood we sell is FSC certified wood, which means the forests it has been sourced from are managed with consideration to other people, wildlife and the environment.

What is Solid Fuel?

Solid fuel can be defined as “various types of solid material that are used as fuel to produce energy and provide heating, usually released through combustion.” Although the term is normally used to refer to coal and smokeless coal, it can also used to describe firewood, paper, or any other solid material that can be burned to provide heat.

What is the Difference Between Solid Fuel and Smokeless Fuel?

Coal and wood are the most popular forms of solid fuel. However, since the Clean Air Act was introduced, the burning of these products has been forbidden in many areas, such as London and Manchester. This has meant some homeowners have had to find other forms of solid fuel to heat their homes. Smokeless fuel is a form of solid fuel used in designated smokeless zones where reduction of pollution is a factor.

What is the Difference Between Normal Coal and Smokeless Coal?

Smokeless fuel refers to natural or manufactured coal that unlike standard coal, does not produce smoke when burnt. Instead it provides an environmentally form of heating which releases less carbon emissions than ordinary house coal. So with smokeless fuel you can enjoy the warmth and cosiness of an open fire without impacting on the environment.

Smokeless coal in general gives off a third more heat than normal house coal and lasts longer too. This means a bag of smokeless coal is a much more economical and efficient form of heating than ordinary house coal. It also creates less ash than standard house coal, so you spend less time cleaning your fireplace.

Smokeless fuels can be used for a wide range of open fires and appliances including room heaters, multi-purpose stoves, free standing boilers and cookers. Many of these appliances are multi-fuel so both wood and solid fuel can be used.

Anthracite is a natural form of smokeless coal still mined in South Wales. Manufactured smokeless coal is produced by reducing the volatile content of coal, grinding it then mixing it with a combination of fuels to form uniform size briquettes.

Big K sell a full range of winter fuel products to make that perfect home fire including seasoned hardwood logs, kiln dry logs, wood burning logs, kindling, firelighters and matches. Winter Firewood

Winter firewood has two categories: hardwood and softwood. If you choose to heat your home with firewood, it is best to have a selection of hard and softwood logs as although hardwood logs burn slower than softwood logs, some hardwood logs are difficult to burn. Softwoods are easier to light and burn quickly so they are good for getting the fire started.

Seasoned Hardwood Logs

Big K hardwood winter fuel log nets contain a mix of UK sourced hardwoods cut from sustainable sources. The nets can include pieces of birch, ash, beech, elm, oak, cedar and lime wood cut to a handy size so they are easy to store. They are ideal for use in wood burners and other appliances as well as open fireplaces.

As Big K hardwood logs have been well seasoned, they contain 40 per cent less moisture so they burn really well.

Softwood Logs

Big K softwood logs also come in 10 kg net bags and contain a mix of pine, fir and spruce. They are not seasoned as long as our hardwood logs so they are not guaranteed to have a moisture content of less than 40 per cent. Which Type of Logs and Wood do Big K Products Sell?

Big K has a superb selection of seasoned firewood for sale including seasoned firewood hardwood logs, real firewood logs, big flame heat logs, instant lighting logs and kindling. Most of our firewood is FSC certified wood, which means that the forests it has been sourced from are managed with consideration for people, wildlife and the environment. Big K has been an accredited supplier of FSC certified wood since 1997.

Our seasoned firewood and logs are sold by the bag rather than by weight. This is because the weight of the wood changes as it loses moisture, so weight is not an accurate measurement of the quantity being sold. Our seasoned firewood and hardwood logs are sold in bags and tied.

Big K also sell kiln dried logs which are dried in our special on-site ovens fuelled by our own waste.

Which is best to burn – hardwood logs or softwood logs?

Firewood falls into two categories: hardwood and softwood. Hardwood logs have a higher density, which means they burn slower than softwood logs. This provides a more consistent heat. Softwood logs burn faster and produce a more powerful heat. While both have the same calorific output, softwood logs are less efficient as you need twice as many to heat your home for the same length of time.

If you choose firewood to heat your home, it is a good idea to have a selection of hard and softwood logs. This is because although hardwoods burn better overall, some of the denser woods, such as oak and elm can be very difficult to burn. It is therefore worthwhile to burn these together with a softwood. These are easier to light and burn quickly which makes them perfect for getting a fire started.

Which Big K products are good for a quick fire on a cold night?

Instant lighting firelogs are a perfect solution for generating quick heat in your home, as they create an instant fire. Big K firelogs are clean, quick, easy to use and extremely efficient. No fire lighters or kindling wood is needed and they are very safe to use as no sparks are emitted. All you need to do is to light the wrapper and let the firelog do the rest. Each firelog burns for about 2 to 3 hours – which is great for quickly warming up the house after being out at work all day.

Which Big K winter fuel offers the best value for money?

Heat logs are ideal for burning on wood fuel stoves, wood burners, open fires, pizza ovens and even outside in chimneas. They provide more than double the output of heat to normal firewood logs and burn longer, making them a cost effective and efficient choice for heating at home. Quick to light and easy to use, they are ideal for providing a warm fire on a cold night. They also don’t spit or create sparks and leave little ash so it creates less hassle cleaning your fireplace. Heat logs are made from 100 per cent recycled waste material and are FSC certified.
